To be fair and give equal time to the Magellan owners please post your stories and facts about Megellan's repair service or problems.
I will start with mine.
About 2 1/2 years ago my Magellen Sportrak lost all of its waypoints on the way to a cache. I had to re-enter the waypoints back into the unit. It was very annoying since at that time I did not own a data cacble and had to do it all manually. And a couple of other times over the past 2 1/2 years when I was out caching my betteries went dead and I had to put fresh ones in. Since then no problems to date.
OK lets everyone else's Magellan stories _________________ Member #25 |

| We owned a Magellen for a short period of time. It didn’t work as it was advertised, so one day after having a bad day of caching (4 DNF’s) we gave that miserable thing some flight time out the truck window onto the 14 freeway. Didn’t bother to stop and pick it up to send it in for repairs. Just went out and bought a Garmin and been very happy cachers ever since. Anyone that wants to give their Magellen’s some flight time please contact us, we are good at launching them. |

I have a Magellan Sport Trak Pro that has not worked in almost a year. Maybe we could burn it at the Beach Blanket Bingo II Event.

Doug,
Let us have a shot at flipping it a few times on the beach before we torch it.
Like I said before we have gotten good at it. Experienced! |

I won a color Sportrac Magellan in an event, and used it a couple of times. It always seems to be slow to zero out near the cache.... much slower than my Garmin legend. Since we need to find many caches in short periods of time (see the Adventures in Geocaching movie), we quit using it.
Yes, we gave it a fair evaluation. We had Matt use it while we approached caches. He was normally 60 feet off for the first minute or so, until the Magellan settled down. The legend always was right on the cache as we approached. _________________

We are still on our first GPSr, it's a Magellan SporTrak Map. It's the yellow one, and the tech side of it alludes me. That's the hubby's job.
We do frequently get within 20 feet of GZ, then have to do a lot of searching.
One of our frustrations is that once turned on, it can take awhile to initialize. Sometimes way over 10 or 15 minutes. Other times, it jumps right to the satellites and we are in business.
We find that if we change the batteries before a long day of caching, it helps.
We have been watching the various online sites for the new Garmin 60cs. One of us is hoping that Santa will be kind to us this year. In the meantime, we have a BIG caching weekend planned for our family in the desert and we are dragging the couch potato kid with us (TRex127). _________________

I have 3 Magellans. First the 310--a nice entry-level unit that found my first several hundred caches. Upgraded to a Sportrak Pro so I could connect with my PC. I had one repair with it--it kept turning itself off. Was promptly repaired at no cost.
I've now upgraded to an Explorist 500. I had a problem with the PC/GPS cable. It was replaced, but the replacement cable had a burr on the screw, which stripped the threads on the GPS. The GPS was quickly repaired at no cost. |
